Just wanted to let everybody know that the move to Honduras went well. I left yesterday morning at 6 am from Chalchuapa and made it to Santa Rosa de Copán at about 1 pm. It´s pretty cold and rainy here, but today it´s warm and sunny. Apparently, this is really rare, but I hope it stays this way for a while longer. They haven´t told me what I´ll be doing yet, but I´ll let y´all know once I know.
The goodbye in Chalchuapa was really sweet and I´ll post pictures when I get the chance, hopefully sometime this week. Also, I will be getting a phone here but don´t have one just yet, and I have a new address too, so email me if you want it.
Here in Santa Rosa de Copán, the internas (boarders) come from very poor families and all of them are campesinas, which means they´re from the country. Unlike Chalchuapa, there are 69 of them and they´re older. The youngest is 12 and the oldest is 23. Also, this is a regular high school too, so they don´t leave during the day, and other outside girls join them for classes. They aren´t orphans and don´t come from at-risk families. They´re just really poor, a lot poorer than the girls in Chalchuapa (I found it hard to believe that they could get any poorer than those girls, but they are).
Last night, all the sisters and I watched a soccer game between Honduras and Puerto Rico (Honduras soundly spanked them, 4-0), and all the sisters were yelling at the tv and getting up to pace the floor when they´d get nervous. They also tell me that there´s a team here and I get to go watch a game soon. Judging by the first impression, I think I´m gonna like it here...
Love you all and hope you´re enjoying your summer! Congratulations to the graduates too! Remember that the door is always open if you feel like coming to Honduras!
